As the mother of an atypical son myself, I’m committed to helping moms like us find peace, happiness, and that elusive sweet spot nestled in between selflessness and selfishness.
My complicated life as the mom of an atypical son …
I was born and raised in South Africa with an incredibly strong family, and I wanted nothing more than to recreate that beautiful life here in America. With that big dream in my heart, I dove into marriage and motherhood with grandiose ideas of effortless communication, simple happiness and a tranquil existence.
And then…I actually had children, and boy was I in for a treat.
As the new mom of a beautiful, atypical son, life wasn’t effortless, simple or tranquil.
As I’m sure you can relate, in a short period of time I was transformed from autonomous woman to warrior mom – reinventing motherhood and advocating for my child. Even though I knew this behavior wasn’t sustainable or healthy, I spent every minute of every day nurturing, caring and fighting in an effort to give my son the best life possible – the life I’d always wanted for him.
I made plenty of mistakes, but ultimately I found my way (without having a breakdown!)…
I’ll be the first one to tell you that I made my fair share of mistakes on this journey.
I stopped caring for myself, I overextended and I neglected everyone and everything else. I fell into a cycle of losing my temper, flipping out and then apologizing. I was certain I was headed for a breakdown more than twice. And I forgot that in order to be the best advocate for my child, I needed to make sure I was taken care of.
But through all the mistakes and learning opportunities, I’m happy to say that I did finally learn how to care for my child without losing myself.
My life’s work is helping moms like us find peace…
Drawing from my own experiences, I’ve developed a proven system that gives moms like us gracious guidance for their wonderfully complicated, atypical lives.
I’m certified by one of the top coaching institutes in the world, the world-class Institute for Professional Excellence in Coaching (iPEC), and I’m the founder of Mothering Outside the Lines, a company dedicated to advocating for moms of atypical children.
In addition to my coach certification, I also have bachelor’s degrees in industrial psychology, economics and fashion design. (Variety – the spice of life!)
Let’s start a revolution of mothering outside the lines…
I’d like to leave you today with this thought…
In between total selflessness and the not-so-secret selfish fantasy of running away, there is a place where you can be a wonderful mother without losing your sense of self.
Somewhere in between the noble superwoman and the exhausted and resentful martyr, there is the strong and capable woman you’re meant to be.
If you’re ready to LOVE your child without feeling like you need to fix them, and find that elusive balance of being an amazing mom AND a funny, interesting and vibrant woman, then it’s time to start mothering outside the lines.
